"Knowing What Layer You Are In"

Questions for the Week of May 7, 2007

download this issue

When asked, "how do you best learn?" most people usually respond with either a technique, like "in a classroom," or by naming their favorite sense, like "I learn best visually." Unfortunately, this implies that most people define "learning" as the ability to parrot the correct answer.

What is wrong with this? "Parroting the correct answer" creates parrots, not students; dullards, not Einsteins. So how can we create more Einsteins? By asking questions which are intended to provoke the student's own questions. More important, this turns out to be the best way in which to reawaken in students their lost love of learning.

This week, our topic is "Knowing What Layer You Are In." Would you like to awaken a love of learning in you about this topic? You can, simply by reading the teacher's questions and then, by asking yourself, "what questions did these words just provoke in me?"

"Knowing What Layer You Are In"

The Teacher's Questions (asked by Ed)

  • How does knowing what layer you’re in make you more conscious?
  • How can I ask a question without “Layer 2-ing” it?
  • Why do I have to suffer through aloneness in order for me to learn?
  • Does having an awareness of our needs act as having a stepping stone into conscious learning?
  • If a need is not one of the four Social Priorities (Comfort, Neatness, Understanding, Freedom), is it just a Layer 2 creation?
  • Is a hateful Nazi (Layer 4) more conscious than a born again Christian (Layer2)?

Sample Student Response Questions (asked by Steven)

  • If you know what Layer you are in, does this mean you are conscious? If so, to what degree?
  • If you do not know what Layer you are in, does this mean you are in shock? If yes, how badly?
  • If I feel needy, how can I know whether I'm in Layer 7 (needs) or Layer 5 (symptoms)?
  • If I am in Layer 6 (blocks), can I picture anything? Nothing? A few things? Does it change?
  • If I am in Layer 2 (Punishing questions, explanations, and excuses for not punishing) and I do not understand why something has happened, will I feel compelled to know why?
  • If I am in Layer 8 (disconnects), will I feel afraid? Angry? Nothing?
  • When I am in Layer 9 (personal connections), do these connections have to be to other human beings? To living human beings? To fictitious persons?
