"On Layer Seven - Pure Needs"

Questions for the Week of May 21, 2007

download this issue

When asked, "how do you best learn?" most people usually respond with either a technique, like "in a classroom," or by naming their favorite sense, like "I learn best visually." Unfortunately, this implies that most people define "learning" as the ability to parrot the correct answer.

What is wrong with this? "Parroting the correct answer" creates parrots, not students; dullards, not Einsteins. So how can we create more Einsteins? By asking questions which are intended to provoke the student's own questions. More important, this turns out to be the best way in which to reawaken in students their lost love of learning.

This week, our topic is "On Layer Seven - Pure Needs" Would you like to awaken a love of learning in you about this topic? You can, simply by reading the teacher's questions and then, by asking yourself, "what questions did these words just provoke in me?"

"On Layer Seven - Pure Needs"

The Teacher's Questions (asked by Ted)

  • How can you tell the difference between being in Layer Five (symptoms) and Layer Seven (pure needs)? Aren't symptoms just another kind of neediness?
  • When a two year old has a tantrum, is this tantrum a symptom or a need?
  • When a grown woman overeats, is she ever responding to a pure need?
  • If you well up with tears when someone hurts your feelings, is this a need?
  • Are arguments needs or more Outer Layer blaming?
  • Can you even have a pure need to argue?
  • Is having sex a need or is it something more complex. Perhaps a combination of two or more Layers at once?
  • When you get a cold and want to lay down, is this a pure need or a symptom?
  • When you want to understand why someone yelled at you is this a Layer Seven need?

Sample Student Response Questions (asked by Nancy)

  • I've heard people say they need alone time. Is this a Layer Seven need?
  • When a woman says she needs someone to understand her, is this need a Layer Seven Need?
  • When you go out without a jacket and the temperature gets cold, is feeling chilly a symptom or a need?
  • Can you ever have a Layer Seven need simply go away? Or if it feels like this, has the need simply gone underground, as in, into the person's unconscious?
  • Do animals such as dogs and cats have a Layer Seven?
  • Do all sentient beings have an unconscious?
  • Is the essence of Layer Seven a person's core personality? If yes, then how much of this core personality can change over time. Any? A lot? By choice? Through healing?
